Project 5000 Food for the Needy

Make a Difference Helping Local Families

Every day families are in need of food in our community. Through Project 5000, a family of four can be provided with a two-day supply of basic food. Trinity members pick up empty cardboard boxes with a list of non-perishable food items inside. As they shop, they buy some of the items on the list, and when the box is filled, they bring it back to the church. The boxes are saved until a family in need is identified. Hundreds of Project 5000 boxes are distributed each year.

Project 5000 boxes are often donated by individual families, and our school classes usually each give a box every year. Also, Sunday School classes, youth group, scouts, and other groups fill Project 5000 boxes as a service project. Thank you for participating in our exciting ministry to our own local community as we seek to provide emergency food supplies to those in need! You will enable us to share our love and concern to many persons. I hope this will be a meaningful experience for you and your family.

Emergency Food List for a Family of Four for Two Days

The following are recommended for nutritional and practical reasons:

  • 2 cans meat (16 oz. Max each)
  • 1 box hot cereal
  • 2 cans vegetables
  • 1 pkg. powdered milk
  • 2 cans fruit
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 2 cans soup
  • 1 jar peanut butter
  • 2 boxes macaroni & cheese
  • 1 box dry soup mix
  • 1 box instant rice or 1 box mashed potatoes
  • Optional: 1 small bottle dish detergent

Suggestions for Your Project 5000 Donations

  1. Put your box in a place where you will see it often. It will serve as a reminder of your participation in Project 5,000 and will help you to fill it more quickly.
  2. Please look at the list of food items that are to be put into the box. This is a tested list and is specifically designed to meet the needs of a family of four for two days. Please do not substitute items on the list.
  3. Canned items for the box should be REGULAR size cans. Packaged items should also be regular or medium sized.
  4. Variety in the canned items will be helpful. Rather than putting in two days of corn, etc., it would be better to have different items. Typical vegetable items may include beans, peas, corn, carrots, beets, etc. Fruits may include peaches, pears, pineapple, fruit cocktail, etc. Meat may be Spam, corned beef hash, beef stew, etc. Please avoid odd or exotic type foods, such as artichokes, spiced apples, etc.
  5. Set your own pace in filling your box. Most families will find buying one or more items each week will be easy, and will keep the project constantly before them. Others on fixed incomes may be able to purchase an item only occasionally or may wish to join with another person in filling a box. It is up to you how fast you fill your box. It will be needed and welcomed whenever you fill it.
  6. When your box is filled, please return it to the church office anytime during the week from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm -or bring it to the Sanctuary on Sunday when you come to church. Please do not seal or tape the box when you return it.
  7. We encourage you to take another box home with you when you return your full box and start filling another one. You will find a real sense of joy in knowing you are hell2ing others in a tangible way.
  8. Make this project a family-centered project in your home. Encourage all members of the family to participate by helping in the purchase of items and in contributing toward the cost of the items. Children and youth can participate by giving an amount of their allowance or spending money, etc.
  9. Allow your participation in this project to be a spiritual growth experience for your family. Pray for the persons who will receive your box of food. In your blessings before meals, pray for those who do not have enough food around the world.
  10. For INCOME TAX PURPOSES we will be glad to verify receipt of this food box for distribution. Please complete this form, mark the Income Tax Deduction box and turn in with the food box. The form will be returned to you (by mail) with verification signature. You may want to keep this full page and any receipts for Items purchased, as we are not permitted to place a monetary value on your gift.
